Throwley Vineyard was planted in 1985 after careful planning and investigation by the forward thinking owner at the time. It is difficult to say whether global warming and the growing popularity of English Sparkling wine were predicted then but four acres were planted and the vines are now fully mature and entering their prime.

People often wonder what "wine grapes" taste like and how they differ from table grapes. Well just as there are lots of different table grapes there are various tastes and flavours among wine grapes (vitis vinifera). Typically though they are smaller with slightly more acidity and less sweetness. They are however perfectly lovely to eat when ripe and at the end of the season I often wander through the vineyard sampling by taste the grapes in different parts of the vineyard.

Our production is relatively small at somewhere between 2,000-5,000 bottles per year with yields of 10 to 25 hectolitres per hectare (very low by international standards). This allows us to produce very fruity, complex wines with excellent aroma and body.
